Prospective Graduate Students
We welcome highly motivated students interested in pursuing graduate research in ecology, ecosystem conservation, and natural resource management. Applicants with quantitative or computational skills and a background in ecology, natural resource management, or related fields would be particularly well suited for our lab. Please note that if there is a significant mismatch between the supervisor’s area of expertise and the student’s research interests, it may be difficult to provide adequate supervision. In addition, mutual understanding regarding research approaches and communication is also important for maintaining a productive research environment. As pursuing graduate study is an important decision, prospective students who wish to join our lab are required to contact us in advance. Please review our research topics carefully before contacting us.
Funded Ph.D. Opportunities
There are several competitive fellowship programs in Japan that provide financial support for doctoral students. These include the JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists (DC1), a prestigious and competitive national program offering a monthly stipend of ¥200,000, plus up to ¥1,500,000 per year in research funding. The acceptance rate is around 20%, based on recent years. In addition, the University of Tokyo offers SPRING GX, a university-based fellowship that provides similar support, and may offer a more accessible path for some students compared to national fellowships.
A typical timeline for international students applying to our Ph.D. program with support from JSPS is as follows:
April: Apply for the JSPS Research Fellowship.
August: Take the entrance examination for the Ph.D. program in the Department of International Studies (Schedule A).
April (following year): If both applications are successful, begin your Ph.D. studies fully supported by the JSPS fellowship.
Note: Fellowship applications and university admission are separate processes. Both must be submitted independently, but according to the same timeline. For the most up-to-date information on JSPS programs and admission procedures, please refer to the respective official websites.
Prospective Postdocs
We are accepting applications for the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow (deadlines are spring and fall). We encourage enthusiastic researchers interested in ecosystem conservation/management or ecology to contact us about this opportunity. Successful candidates will work with PI Nao Takashina in an interdisciplinary department.
